What Is Crowdtesting? A Plain-English Guide for Developers

Crowdtesting is a testing approach where you send your app to a distributed pool of real people — the crowd — instead of (or in addition to) an internal QA team. Those people test your app on their own devices, in their own environment, and report back what they find.

The "crowd" part is what makes it different from traditional testing. Instead of five QA engineers in an office using the same three devices, you get twenty testers across different phones, OS versions, network conditions, and usage habits. They find things your team will never find, because they're not you.

How crowdtesting actually works

The mechanics vary by platform, but the core flow is the same. You post a testing campaign with your app link and a description of what you want tested. The device diversity argument

Android alone has thousands of active device models. No team owns every device. Crowdtesters use their own phones — real devices they've had for years, with their own system settings, apps installed, and usage patterns.

What to send to crowdtesters vs what to fix yourself

Crowdtesting isn't a substitute for shipping quality code. Fix the obvious bugs before you run a session — testers getting stuck on a crash in the first screen wastes everyone's time and tells you nothing new.

Write specific test scenarios, not "test the app." Give testers a task: "Try to add a new item, set a reminder, and share it with someone." Specific tasks produce specific, actionable feedback. Open-ended sessions produce "it looked good to me."

The cost question
